The rumour about Alexis spread like wildfire. Her meeting with the big boss did not go well, she embarrassed herself and her exciting new project was turned down in record time. She was supposedly ill prepared for the meeting, didn’t know her stuff and tried to bluff her way through…or so the story goes…and now she’s the talk of the entire company.

Sadly, the gossip circulating about Alexis is not good for her, her professional reputation or potentially her career progression at least in the sh...

Workplaces have both written and unwritten rules that govern how people work together and how things really get done. The unwritten rules co-exist alongside the stated intentions that any employer or workplace puts forth in its vision and values, its processes and standard operating procedures and its codes of conduct and policies.

The unwritten or unstated code emanates largely from organisational culture and is shaped by the collective assumptions that are held and upheld through shared belief...

Jamie’s first day on the job was disappointing. Seemingly endless forms to fill out, meeting way too many people in a blur of names and titles and worse of all eating lunch alone in the car. Jamie’s expectations and anticipation were sky high and this day seemed very disconnected from the highly engaging and friendly recruitment process.

On Jamie’s first morning the supervisor had assured him she would have time for him later in the week but for now Jamie had a lot of reading to do in a meeti...

A senior public official shared with me her role’s watchdog challenge given she is tasked with influencing the government of the day, its elected members and an entire bureaucracy to, as strictly as possible, follow legislation that is sometimes unpopular with the electorate. She admitted that influencing the behaviour of a nearly 10,000 person civil service was daunting, perhaps the greatest challenge of a very successful career of leading change and being at the forefront of important public...
